Airship Pirates - When Sea calls to the Sky

Airship Pirates - When Sea calls to the Sky

Summer travels led us to a very unique place - Tivat Bay in Porto Montenegro. This country lies on the shores of the Adriatic Sea between Croatia and Albania. Tivat is situated in an almost ideal place from the ancient people's point of view. It has good access to the sea via the bay and is surrounded by mountains. It is protected from every side by either mountains or sea. There is a narrow water path from the bay to the sea. If there were a fortress, it could defend itself for quite a long time! The other night, it was a huge thunderstorm here, thunderbolts, and heavy rain all night. But all the yachts and even small boats were safe because of the geographical location of the bay.

The reason why we are here - Porto Montenegro - one of the best marines in the world. I gonna join a sailing school and spend about 2 weeks getting a skipper education and license. By the end of it, I will be able to rent a yacht in any marine in the world and, hopefully, we will spend our next vacation sailing around the Mediterranean Sea!

This sea and sailing theme reminded me about a music band from Great Britain - Abney Park. Despite many other modern music, the style of Abney Park could be exactly defined. It's called Steam Punk. Imagine a world without electricity or any modern engines. A world of Victorian England with steam engines, a lot of brass, and stylish outfits. It is called Steam Punk.

Abney Park follows this style in dress and music. It sounds rude but majestical, epic but simple enough. They use electric guitars with an astonishing look! All are equipped with cogs and metal parts, the color of brass and rust. Drums sound like they are set inside an old empty metal garage. When I listen to it - I almost sense the acid smell of brass and old rusty metal. Guitars sound deliberately rude and spiky. But the greatest pleasure of Abney Park music expressivity is the usage of ethnic instruments - accordion and bouzouki. Such details make the music more special. The whole musical picture is enriched with those tiny details of the band's vision of the world.

Speaking of which, the band founder - Robert Brawn - made up the whole universe where their music exists. He is Captain Robert of the pirate airship. According to the story (written in his book Book 1 of The Airship Pirate Chronicles), the band's plane collided with a time-traveling dirigible Ophelia, said to have been created by a Dr. Leguminous Calgori in a freak storm. The band commandeered the vessel, deciding to become airship pirates, and formed a new band from the surviving members of the crash. Since Robert made up this story, the band's songs are all based on this idea. It's not just music anymore - it's a special show for those who love Steam Punk style.

The first song I've heard from Abney Park was Airship Pirate. It's still the best to me. It's the essence of this story. My imagination is blooming when I listen to it. But give a chance to more modern creations. There is an album Off The Grid. I would recommend listening to it as a whole thing. It has its own apocalyptical charm.

p.s. today I wanna launch NameGuesser Game. Guess what the band name means in a comment. No googling, give it a try.
