Apocalyptical Cellos

Apocalyptical Cellos

Hey there! I have a part-time job, where I name work sprints with Finnish Band names. It brings some joy to me. At the end of each week, I write a mini post about the band and pick a song. Some of those posts are here as well.

Today's post is about Apocalyptica!

Apocalyptica is probably well-known across the globe. But I bet even if you heard about them, it's just something like ‘guys with cellos?’

Indeed, these are guys with cellos. It seems like their goal from the foundation was to bring classic sounds more popularity. They formed in 1993 (oh Gosh!) in Helsinki, Sibelius Academy. By the way, Jean Sibelius is a famous music composer from the 19th century. Finns are very proud of him and raise national flags on his birthday every year.

4 guys who studied at the Sibelius Academy of Music in Helsinki, apparently, got too bored (they should be, for sure) and started playing Metallica covers for fun. It turned into a tribute concert, and album and since then they are a worldwide known band, that plays covers for modern music with classical instruments. Cellos mostly. Even at Wacken Music Fest.

I suspect they were the first who plugged in cello into the overdrive amplifier. It sounds pretty well! Later they started to use normal instruments as well, inviting guests (Till Lindemann, for instance). But the primary line of their music is having cellos and playing covers. The very last big show was at a Church in Helsinki, mostly acoustic, classical, and well sounded.

When I was a kid (again…. stop it for god’s sake) I remember talking about Apocalyptica with my friends. I even remember that feeling of something weirdly unique, ancient, and too modern at the same time. Distorted cellos. wow! But I was not able to find that song and that feeling today. Maybe you would do that!
