Battle Bestie

Post from May 2024...

Hyvä Perjantai (Happy Friday in Finnish)! The current band of the week was just occasionally spotted in Spotify playlists. Seems like Spotify noticed that I put a lot of energy into searching and listening to Finnish bands, so it started to suggest me more. I was listening to some radio with Heavy music and something got my attention. Soon later I found out - it’s a Finnish band. Welcome - Battle Beast!

So what is Battle Beast? Let’s find out. The catchy name says for itself - I would easily classify it as Melodic Power Metal. Not sure if it really is, but who cares? I liked the energy a lot. It’s not too complicated, it's moving, and very heroic. I can easily imagine some medieval knight in full armor, with a long sword, riding on his horse to the battle listening to this Battle Beast music in his medieval Bose headphones. Of course, if he would have an offline mp3 player with those sometime in the XV century. Or maybe a Marschall Bluetooth speaker would be suitable there...

Battle Beast music consists of strong women's vocals, and intriguing melodies, turning into rhythmic verses and guitars, which are not annoying or pretending. Actually, this might be not a compliment to the band at all, but this music sounds as not pretending to be better, stronger, or louder. It is trustful, you get what you expect and a good bonus is an aftertaste of upcoming victory, strength in muscles, and desire to make a step forward.

But enough of this - what Wiki says about them? Battle Beast is quite a young band, formed in 2005. The key difference from others - woman as vocalist. If you take a look at their photos, the first thing you notice is a strong woman with big horns! The band was not known a lot until 2010 when they won the Finnish Metal Battle contest and immediately after that were invited to the famous Wacken Open Air. Wacken is a must-have for everybody in the heavy metal scene. It gives great visibility to fans. Apart from getting drunk several days in a row, metalheads find out about new music there. Soon after the band was signed up by Nuclear Blast Records (also quite a success in this area). The first singer didn’t quite stand the intensity and resigned. But the band didn’t grieve too much and found a new vocalist of the same type. To be honest - I don’t know how the former vocalist sounded, but now it feels just right.

Of course, it is not DIO or Blind Guardian. But they are not pretending to be. Try Master of Illusion - such a good iconic thing! Probably you might notice some smell of Maleficent there. But it doesn’t make the song bad at all.
