Soffi Tuker
The more I look into musical space, the more remix culture footsteps I see. The other day I was listening to the interview of a heavy metal music producer being asked - what music do you like - and the answer was … hard dance remixes of old songs! But that’s a different story. Today we have a dancing party with Sofi Tukker
Frankly speaking, I don’t remember when and where I found them, but I think it was right before I traveled to Portugal for the first time. I was working and put on some episode from KEXP, Seattle radio and podcasting station. They use to invite unknown musicians and record live performances.
That time it was a DJ, a girl with electric guit,ar and a whole band of invited musicians looking like they just arrived from some sunny island.
I was surprised by a great combination of instrumental performance, young vibes, dancing spirit, and appealing vocals, in the same time the whole thing was so built together, so solid. It sounded like club music if it was played by the best of the classical musicians. Club music was always something rhythmic but quite simple to me. Not that time - I was impressed and still have Sofi Tukker in my playlist here and there.
Band or duet, if you will, is formed by … Sofi and Tukker, what a surprise. They are friends (or more, not sure, they look so close to each other), who did some jams together and in the time of Covid occasionally had a streaming session of some physical exercises with music from a DJ board. The next day it happened again. And again. Now they are gathering big venues and filming cool music videos!
It might really look like they are just fooling around. I believe, sometimes it is. But the whole music thing is very sensual. It doesn’t bring you into just rhythmic movements. Instead, it puts you intoa vibrating environment of friendship and dancing along with guitar riffs and ethnic vibes.
Oh, and the cherry on the cake - some songs are in Portuguese! They are about Brazil. Give it a shot - especially good on a cold November evening. The very first notes make you feel like in Rio de Janeiro, walking along the beach with a coconut cocktail.
The whole idea is remix-based. They do have their own tunes, they have lyrics and ideas, it is a separate art product, and here and there you hear and feel senses of other artistic influences, some popular songs (Summer in New York), jazz vibes, and well-known music themes. They are not just using it as the foundation, Sofi Tukker is an interpretation of modern summer music! If I need to describe it in a couple of words, it would be summer with my best friends on a beach!
I wish someday I would find them in one playlist like Hot Summer Deep House Mixes 2037. This would be a sign of their becoming classic!
